HAUNTED BROOKLYN HEIGHTS

Meeting point: Meet at the north-west corner of Court Street and Pacific Street. (Half a block south of Trader Joe’s.) This tour is approximately 2 hours in duration and 1.3 miles in length. Runs rain or shine, except in cases of severely inclement weather.

Tour Description: Take a stroll among the graceful old homes of one of Brooklyn’s oldest neighborhoods… but don’t let their sedate charms fool you. Nestled within these dwellings are a wealth of gory, ghastly, haunted, and gruesome tales. See horror master H.P. Lovecraft’s former home, visit the site of a “ghost-haunted” fort, discover the “Gate to Hell” and more!

SPIRITUALISTS OF GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY

Meeting Point: Meet on the street in front of the Green-Wood Cemetery gates on 5th Avenue at 25th Street. 500 25th St, Brooklyn, NY 11232 Subway: R to 25th St. This tour is approximately 2 hours in duration and one mile in length. Runs rain or shine, except in cases of severely inclement weather or cemetery closure. Note: this tour requires somewhat strenuous, hilly walking.

Tour Description: Uncover the strange and spiritual secrets of New York’s foremost Victorian-era cemetery. With a focus on the legacy of Spiritualism in the 19th century, this tour will visit the final resting places of mentalists, mediums, and more.

On the tour we will visit:

  • The tomb of an Egyptologist,
  • A monument to a magician
  • The graves of noted mediums and clairvoyants
  • One of the “mothers of Spiritualism”
  • A psychic whose mysterious powers baffled Gilded Age Brooklynites
  • Inventors and journalists with connections to the Spiritualist movement

Along the route, we’ll also explore the era’s obsession with death and mourning, learn how 19th century technologies may have actually encouraged belief in the spirit world, and discuss the relationship between Spiritualism and the Women’s Rights movement. Note: this tour was formerly known as “Murder & Mayhem, Scandal & Spiritualism.”
