Uncover the strange and spiritual secrets of New York’s foremost Victorian-era cemetery. With a focus on the legacy of Spiritualism in the 19th century, this tour will visit the final resting places of mentalists, mediums, and more. On the tour we will visit the graves of noted mediums and clairvoyants, including Leah Fox, one of the “mothers of Spiritualism,” and a psychic known as “The Brooklyn Enigma,” whose mysterious powers baffled Gilded Age Brooklynites. We’ll also visit the monuments of noted inventors and journalists with connections to the Spiritualist movement. And we’ll visit memorials that situate the Spiritualist movement within broader societal contexts, particularly the prevalence of child mortality and the advent of the Civil War, to deepen our understanding of the human forces and feelings that underlay belief – or the desire to believe – in spirit communication. Along the route, we’ll also explore the era’s obsession with death and mourning, learn how 19th century technologies may have actually encouraged belief in the spirit world, and discuss the many important ways that Spiritualism and the Women’s Rights movement informed each other. This tour is designed and led by Andrea Janes, founder of Boroughs of the Dead and co-author of the Stoker-nominated A Haunted History of Invisible Women, a critical examination of the intersection of gender and ghost lore.
